for players of any instrument to learn & play some Border Tunes.
Licensed Venue - The Eildon Centre (upstairs)
Band Workshops
(Sat am and Sunday pm) - Led by Lori and Innes Watson for
intermediate to experienced players aged 16- 25. For players of
any instrument wishing to work in a group and create
arrangements of some tunes to perform together.
Performance
Masterclass
(Sat pm) Also led
by Lori and Innes Watson. Learn how to enhance your performance
technique. Suitable for solo players of any instrument wishing
some personal guidance.
Fiddle
Fiddle Futures
- with Carly Blain. For younger or less confident players
wishing to learn a few more straightforward tunes. Tunes will be
taught by ear, but music can be provided.
'Steady
Tunes' Fiddle & Mixed instruments
- with Rachel
Cross, for those wishing to learn some Border Tunes either by
ear or with the music, and play together at a steady pace.
Basic skills in Keys D,G and A
Fiddle
'From Cape Breton to Cape Wrath'
- with Iain
Fraser, a guy equally comfortable with both Scottish and
transatlantic styles.
Great for those players who look for help with technique,
bowing ideas, stylistic hints, and tips.
Flute and
Whistle
Martin Marroni (Flute)
will focus teaching some Border Tunes on Saturday morning, while
Arthur Cross
will share his expertise on
both whistle and
low D whistle
in the afternoon on Saturday. Some whistles are available to
borrow.
Gordon Turnbull
(Flute and whistle) will offer whistle and flute for less
confident players on Sunday morning, and offer Flute workshops
for more experienced players on Sunday afternoon
Guitar
Graham Dolan
(Guitar, Standard Tuning) Graham is a
regular session player in the east side of the Borders and will
be sharing various chords, progressions, & wee tricks he has
learned from many other guitarists over the years, in standard
tuning. Knowledge of the basic chords is required. Learn the
basic ‘10th’ chords used in the more swingy style and Shetland
style of guitar accompaniment!
Innes Watson
(Guitar - alternative tunings) must be the
most 'sought -after' trad guitarist in Scotland right now. He is
equally accomplished both as a melody player and rythmic
accompany-ist.
Bodhran
Paul Dorricott (Novice)
shares his knowledge of simple and effective techniques for
beginner bodhran players. He may be able to provide a few
instruments for his workshops.
Chris Waite (Intermediate)
is a multi-instrumentalist playing pipes, whistle, guitar and
percussion. However he will be working to help develop more
sophisticated and sensitive bodhran techniques with intermediate
players.
Song
Lori Watson
will be drawing on her wide knowledge and expertise in Scots
Song in this song workshop suited to all ages of songsters.
Sea Shanties with Iain Abernethy.
Iain has developed a wealth of knowledge about this
particular style of work song and will share it enthusiastically
with participants. No previous singing experience required -
just be willing to haul away on the ropes !
Appalachian Clog Dance 'Come &
Try' Beginners workshop

Why not try a different dance style.?
Appalachian clog is a cross between tap and clog dancing. This
is a beginners workshop so anyone of any age ( 8 - 80 ) is
welcome to have a try. Tap shoes are worn and a box of tap shoes
of most sizes will be available, or wear 'hard soled' shoes (not
trainers) .Come and learn a few steps and the odd dance or two.
'Come and Try' Harp
Elspeth Smellie will be
bringing about 5-7 harps with her, so this is a wonderful
opportunity to try out this instrument. Elspeth will also teach
those with previous harp playing experience. This was very
popular last year at the Gaitheirn.
Accordion Fun
Andrew Waite (Young Scottish
Traditional Musician finalist 2011) will work with a range of
players on both new tunes and arrangements according to
experience. All accordions welcome. |
