Our instrumental and song workshops
provide a range of opportunities for everyone from complete beginner to
more accomplished players and singers. This year we have :-Fiddle, Bodhran, Flute, Guitar,
Song, Irish Step Dance and Whistle tutors.
Fiddle - For those who are ready to explore more
technique and stylistic aspects as well as repertoire, Border Fiddle
with
Lori
Watson
and Shetland Fiddle
with Jenna Reid
should provide a contrast !
For those who are building confidence
in their instrument we have Fiddle Fun (under 13’s)– and
Fiddle Force (any age!).
Lori Watson will also
provide a Border Song Workshop, and
Corrina Hewat a 'Song
and Harmony' workshop.
Our ’Come and try'
sessions, Harp, Whistle and Irish Step dance are intended for those who
have never touched the instrument, or tried the activity before.
Instruments will be provided.
Flute workshops are always a strong
feature of the Border Gaitherin and Claire Mann will join us to
take an intermediate class. Gordon Turnbull will provide one
workshop for novice flute players as well as 'Come & Try' whistle.
Elspeth Smellie (Harp) and
Frank McGuire (bodhran & other percussion) add to an impressive
line-up of tutors.
All other workshops are aimed at people
who have their own instrument and can play to a basic level and above.
Workshops last for two hours (with a
short break) and can be booked singly. However, to get the most out of
the guitar, flute and bodhran, more than one workshop would be
recommended.

What can you expect at the workshops ? Fun !
and friendly tuition !
The instrumental and song workshops are all held in Coldstream Primary
school using some
classrooms, and the school hall. Registration
takes place from 9 am on Saturday 29th May.
To avoid disappointment,
prior booking for workshops is recommended. (See Booking link).
However
in previous years it has been possible to turn up on the day and
register for a
workshop, although first choice cannot be guaranteed.
Groups of up to 16 participants will be working for two hours with the
tutor. There is usually
a short break and refreshments are available in
the school foyer.
Tutors
will teach tunes and instrumental techniques. Participants will be
expected to learn
by ear, but most tutors will also provide music.
All age groups of participants are welcome,
but under 12 year olds
should be accompanied to and from the school premises.
There is
usually a degree of flexibility if participants feel they need to change
from one
level of workshop to another.
We like
to round off the weekend workshops with a 'Gaitherin Together' event at
the
conclusion of Sunday afternoon's workshops. This takes place in the
School hall where
the workshop tutors a Tutors and their classes play together for us all,
in a very
informal setting - NOT a concert ! - but a 'sharing' .
We look
forward to seeing you there.
